I started dialysis when I was 20. I was a mother of a new born and I needed a kidney transplant. I was put on the transplant list the day I started dialysis. I was told my wait for a cadaver donor was somewhere between 5-7 years! I just sat there in shock thinking I don’t want to do dialysis that long.. I was lucky enough to receive my first kidney from my adoptive mother about one year later. Many people aren’t as fortunate. They don’t get the option of a living donor so they have to wait. Spending many years on dialysis just hoping they don’t die. I have had my kidney for almost five years now. In that time I’ve been so lucky to be able to get the chance to be a mother, travel, go back to school and get a job while having this kidney. I was recently was told I will soon start this process over again. Back to dialysis, back on the list and trying to find a living donor. I’ve had many ups and downs on both sides but why not help all those people waiting for a transplant! If we can make a difference in how long the wait for a transplant is why wouldn’t we try. we need more donors! Living and deceased. “On average one person dies every three days while waiting for a transplant! Take a couple minutes and register!”
Organ transplantation gives thousands of children and adults each year a renewed chance at living full and active lives. Committing to be an organ donor is a generous decision that can save the lives of up to eight individuals, and even more if a donor can give corneas and tissue
