Last year alone, almost 1,000 Ontario lives were saved thanks to the generosity of an organ donor. That’s a lot of joyful and grateful families. It’s also a record in Ontario for organ donations.

Over the last eight years, the McGuinty government has worked with partners like the Trillium Gift of Life Network to increase the number of organ and tissue donors and save more lives. Thanks to the generosity of Ontarians, the number of transplants has grown by 54%. Yet today, only one in five Ontarians are registered organ or tissue donors. Just over one-quarter of Kitchener residents are registered donors. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage families in my community to become a donor. It only takes three minutes to fill out the online form. Every person who signs up can potentially save eight lives. The Gift of 8 Movement is one more way to encourage Ontarians and provide them with the information and inspiration they need to register their consent. I’m a registered organ and tissue donor.
